The scientific subject of plastic and reconstructive surgery deals with the use of surgical techniques to treat acquired or congenital abnormalities (disorders of form and function) as well as body image issues. The term plastic comes from the word plasticos in the ancient Greek language and means to shape, to fit into a mold. Conversely, the word reconstruction comes from an old Latin verb that means to remake. Aesthetic surgery, sometimes known as cosmetic surgery, is a sub-specialty of plastic surgery that refers to procedures and attempts to improve body image.

Interests of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery include congenital anomalies (cleft lip and palate, head and face anomalies, ear anomalies, etc.), defects seen as a result of face and body trauma or accident, skin and soft tissue tumors, burns and radiation damage, genital organ anomalies (e.g. undescended testes), peripheral nerve injuries/compressions, acute and chronic skin wounds, hand accidents/anomalies and diseases, all aesthetic interventions (eye, nose, breast, abdomen, etc.) and laser surgery applications.

Oral, Facial and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hand Surgery (Microsurgery) are the sub-branches of the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
