ACADEMIC

FACULTIES
MEDICINE

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is the branch of medicine where the knowledge and skills of gynecological diseases (diseases and tumors of the female reproductive organs) and obstetrics are acquired in old terms. During the eight weeks of the fourth semester of medical school, it is one of the most significant internships in the Department of Surgical Medical Sciences. Training covers issues pertaining to assisted reproduction, malignancies and tumors of the female reproductive system, as well as issues with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. In addition, preventive medicine practices on women’s health are also included in the training.

In women’s diseases, also known as gynecology, ovaries, uterus (cervix and corpus/endometrium), fallopian tubes, genital area (vagina and vulva) and related bladder problems are treated. Problems such as menstrual irregularities, vaginal discharge, ovarian cysts, chocolate cysts, fibroids, uterine or cervical cancers, infertility, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunctions, and urinary incontinence are most common in women. In addition, vaccination and IVF (in-vitro fertilization)  applications applied to patients who want to have children, contraception, sexuality and menopause problems also concern the gynecology department.

Pregnancy and childbirth, also called obstetrics, starts with pregnancy detection, includes pregnancy week calculation, pregnancy problems, risky pregnancy detection and follow-up, pregnancy nutrition and childbirth preparation processes. It is essential that normal birth is performed safely. Perinatology treatments are applied in cases such as complications that occur during pregnancy, the presence of chronic disease in the expectant mother, developmental retardation in the baby and various anomalies, risk of premature birth, multiple pregnancy, recurrent pregnancy losses. In high-risk pregnancies, cesarean section operation may also be indicated depending on the defined criteria.

The procedures and examinations to be performed by the gynecologist differ from each other depending on the person’s disease history, examination findings and suspected diseases. Procedures and surgeries performed in the field of gynecology and obstetrics include: Ultrasonographic examinations, blood tests for hormonal disorders, bone density measurement in menopause, gynecological examinations, gynecological tumors (e.g. myoma) and cancers, mammography, cancer scans (PAP smear/swab test and HPV DNA test), hysteroscopy and probe (diagnostic and therapeutic) curettage, laparoscopic and robotic surgical interventions for gynecological organs.
